Formulators can easily create waterborne coatings with standard additives, such as multi-substrate primers, wall paints, wood lacquers, stain and tannin blocking primers or primer and topcoat “2 in 1” systems.

ENCOR® 2793 has an excellent adhesion on wood, concrete, ceramic, plastics and many other substrates. It is outstanding for stain and tannin blocking. It even prevents the knots of the wood, such as pine, from bleeding and blistering.

Easy to coating formulation

ENCOR® 2793 optimizes adhesion and stain-blocking performance as an all-in-one binder for coating formulations. In the table below, we propose two paint formulation guidelines with ENCOR® 2793 with standard additives.

Adhesion coating performance

We can find many different substrates in our houses. Waterborne binders can have difficulties with good adhesion on flat surfaces, such as plastics, ceramics, metals, etc. ENCOR® 2793 enables the formulation of one coating that has a durable adhesion on virtually any substrates that can be found in our house.

Test: Adhesion cross-test according to ISO 2409

Test conditions:

  1. One layer of paint is applied to the substrates at 200µm wet thickness
  2. After the required drying time, a grid is cut on the surface of the coating
  3. An adhesive tape is applied and pulled

In Table 1, we observe the result of the test ISO 2409 performed with a paint formulated with ENCOR® 2793 at PVC 40%.

Quotation: 0 = perfect adhesion to 5 = no adhesion

Result of the adhesion test, ISO 2409, with ENCOR® 2793 formulated in the paint at PVC 40%.

Tannin blocking

Some wood species like pine and oak are difficult to cover with waterborne coatings because they contain tannins. Tannins are hydrophilic molecules that can migrate in such coatings, leading to their coloration. ENCOR® 2793 interacts with tannins and prevents the wood substrates from bleeding.

The picture below represents the blocking mechanism of paint with ENCOR® 2793. Two coats are applied on a tannin-rich wood (i.e. pine, oak, Merbau, etc.). The first coat blocks the majority of the tannins. The second coat acts as a topcoat and blocks the last molecules.

Test: Tannin blocking (internal method)

Test conditions:

  1. Two layers of the paint are applied on a Merbau panel at 150g/m² (24h between the two coats)
  2. 24h after the second layer the panel is put in a climatic chamber for two weeks
    Aging cycle: 12h at 90% relative humidity and 40°C / 12h at 35% relative humidity and 40°C
  3. dE is measured (reference: paint applied on a Leneta card 2A)

Merbau wood

Merbau wood is an exotic wood with a very high concentration of tannins.

The pictures below show the Merbau wood panel and the results after performing the test conditions with a paint with ENCOR® 2793 at PVC 25% and a standard acrylic satin paint. We observe the results of the test with one layer and with two layers of paint.

Comparison between standard acrylic satin paint and ENCOR 2793

Knot blocking

Knots are critical parts of the wood. Tannins and hydrophilic molecules, like lignans, are more concentrated at this area. It would provide a great tendency to bleed and cause discoloration, blistering and eventually, destruction of the coating. Thanks to its innovative functionality, ENCOR® 2793 will sustain these heavy conditions.

Test: Knot blocking (internal method)

Test conditions:

1. A pinewood panel with a visible knot is selected
2. Two layers of the same paint are applied on the panel at 150g/m² (24h between the two coats)
3. The coated panel is dried under 23°C / 50% relative humidity for 7 days
4. Once dried the panel is put in the QUVA condensation test chamber for 1 week
5. We observe the general aspect of the coating after the QUVA condensation test.

The pictures below shows the pinewood panel with its knot and the results after performing the test.

Stain blocking

Test: Stain blocking

Test conditions:

  1. A substrate (for example, a filter), is stained
  2. Two layers of the same paint are applied at 150 g/m² on the stained filter, 24h drying between the layers
  3. After 24 hours drying time at 23°C / 50% relative humidity, the dE is measured on top of the stained coating (reference: paint applied on a Leneta card 2A)

The table 2 gives the measure of the dE as explained in the test conditions.
